Our firm

Monette Barakett Lévesque Bourque Pedneault has served its clients for 90 years. Founded in 1912 by Me Gustave Monette senior, our firm has never ceased to represent its clients with efficiency and competence. Through the years, lawyers of our firm have practiced in numerous sectors of the law.
The 1960's was a time of expansion for the firm. Faced with the particular problems of the work environment of that era, our firm developed a savoir-faire in labour law and recruited new lawyers in order to meet the needs of many new clients
In the mid-seventies, our firm was composed of about twenty lawyers and it acquired a profile that is still the same today.
To our expertise in labour law, occupational health and safety law, administrative law, civil law, medical and hospital liability and health law, was added our competence in commercial and business law, municipal taxation and the law governing religious communities and charitable organisations.
Our clients
Dedicated lawyers, aided by reliable and devoted staff, have allowed us to provide excellent service and thus gain loyal and diversified clients. We take great pride in the fact that we have been serving many of our clients for a very long time.
Very present in the health care and social services sector, we also advise many public and parapublic organisations. In the private sector, our clients come from different fields: financial institutions, food industry, commercial establishments, real estate enterprises, manufacturing enterprises, etc. We also represent many charitable organisations and religious communities.
No matter which sector of activities our clients are from, they can rest assured that they will find an energetic team of lawyers available to help them at all times. It has been our way of doing business for the last 90 years.

Our philosophy

Most of the lawyers at Monette Barakettt have articled with the firm. They have acquired their experience and they have developed their practice while assimilating values that have made the success of our firm. We believe that the promotion of all our clientsí interests finds its way through fundamental values: hard work, availability, integrity and competence. These values have enabled us to efficiently accomplish our mandates in the best interests of our clients.

The strength of our team

Thanks to the strength of its team, its motivation and its professionalism, our firm meets its commitments and succeeds in maintaining the confidence of its clients. Our team allies youth and experience, boldness and wisdom; a strong and diversified team that perpetuates the tradition of excellence of our firm.

Many years ago, we chose to be a smaller size firm (20 to 25 lawyers). This size helps to maintain close contacts and provides for a better work atmosphere.

This choice also provides great flexibility and helps consolidate bonds between the firm's lawyers as well as with each of our clients. Most of our clients use the services of many of our firm's lawyers. We are proud of that because it ensures better exchanges of views, an important factor when it is time to elaborate a delicate strategy or when a crucial decision has to be made.

Monette Barakettt is not like most other firms. With our size, history, members and philosophy, we believe that we are a flexible, devoted and competent team able to provide the best legal services in our fields of practice.

Learning to practice law within our team

The size of our firm favours human relations and your implication in briefs.

You will be asked to work in all sectors of the law in which we offer our services. There is no formal rotation system because we encourage articling students to try all our fields of practice in order to be able to make a judicious choice concerning an eventual specialisation.

You will be asked to do legal research on precise questions, draft proceedings, opinions, notes, authorities and minutes. You will also be asked to plead before tribunals and assist lawyers at hearings.

You will have the opportunity to meet clients in relation to various legal proceedings, including examinations on discovery. You will be asked to exchange views with members of our team on legal questions of law or possible strategies to adopt in litigation.

We will ask you to be "proactive" in your approach with our members.

Supervision

The size of our firm encourages exchanges of views and teamwork. You will be under the supervision of a tutor. However, you will be asked to work with all of our lawyers who will speak directly and personally to you without necessarily using memos or messages.

Members of our team leave their door open when they work (unless circumstances require otherwise) and you are invited to speak to us at any time to obtain advice, solutions or simply to talk about the things that preoccupy you at the professional or personal level.

The availability of our members is a particularity of our firm. It is our culture.

Technical support

We possess a complete library which is envied by all. Our information technology, integrated in a network, offers each member access to our different in-house databases, results of many decades of data collection. We also have access to all computer science tools to support our fields of practice like CD-Rom, Internet and databases.

Our system is well documented and it allows the articling student to be well guided in his research.

The services of two (2) paralegals are available, one in labour law, health care law and occupational health and safety law, and the other in commercial and corporate law.

Screening process

There is only one employment interview and it is held in the presence of all members of the recruitment committee. Following the interviews, the committee deliberates and candidates are chosen unanimously.

Part-time employment

Our firm encourages our articling students to work part-time during their Šcole du Barreau year for those who study in Montreal.

However, studies must have priority over work and we leave it up to the students to take the necessary time off to prepare for the bar exams.

Evaluation and hiring

At the end of the internship, an evaluation is made in relation to the professional work and to the personal integration of the articling student.

Monette Barakett has always favoured internal growth. Almost all of our lawyers have articled with our firm.

It is to be noted that articling students who could not stay and work as lawyers in our firm have easily found positions in other firms or elsewhere.
